Widely regarded as one of the foremost chamber choirs in Derbyshire, The Sitwell Singers have been making music together for 50 years. We have built a reputation for “stylistically spot-on” performances of a varied repertoire, from the great choral masterpieces of European sacred music to folk, jazz and Billy Joel.

“deeply thoughtful … beautifully sensitive”

We are based at St John’s, Bridge Street in Derby, but perform in venues all over the city, the East Midlands and the Peak District. With a core membership of around 30 singers, we present four to five concerts each season, a mix of large-scale works and lighter seasonal programmes. Whether we’re singing a cappella or with brass or a period string ensemble, we’re known for our “huge dynamic range” and our “immaculate blend”.

“… ebbs and flows of tension superbly controlled”

We are always pleased to hear from talented singers who are interested in joining us. If you’re looking for a choir dedicated to enjoying and performing the best choral music to a high standard, we would love to hear from you. For more information please Contact us.

“Christmas concerts can be desperately tacky affairs, but this had ‘class’ written all over it.”

Appointment of new conductor

The Sitwell Singers are delighted to announce the appointment of Dexter Drown as their conductor from September 2022. Dexter is currently studying for a Masters in Conducting at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire having previously studied Music at the University of Manchester. He has held positions as Director of Music and Assistant Director of Music in Manchester and Oxford. He is also a tenor soloist and sings at the Birmingham Oratory.

The choir would also like to take this opportunity to express their sincere thanks to David Henshaw for his sensitive leadership this season following the death of Malcolm Goldring last May. The past year has been very difficult for all choirs as the country has come out of lockdown, but especially so for the Sitwell Singers as we additionally came to terms with the loss of our conductor. We are very fortunate to have someone of David’s ability amongst our ranks.
